Automatic Dewatering Pump System
The VIPOR (Vault Integrated Pump and Oil Redundancy) is an automatic dewatering pump system that filters and evacuates water from secondary containment vaults and sumps. The system uses the same filtering concepts and adaptable alternative technologies for secondary oil containment as the Justrite Barrier Boom oil filtration panels and HFF Oil Stop Valve. In the event of a significant oil release, the VIPOR’s main filter core solidifies, creating a barrier that prevents any liquid to pass.
VIPOR's proven oil containment technology provides a safe compliant water discharge solution in applications where an automatic dewatering pump or sump pump is used. It is suitable for situations of chronic water intrusion, sediment problems and risk of hydrocarbons. This would include underground utility vaults, substations, elevator shafts, or other areas that contain oil or fuel equipment and can accumulate oil and water.
Unlike unreliable oil switches, VIPOR’s filtering technology eliminates the possibility of oil discharge and provides full oil containment.

VIPOR-SOWF Dewatering Pump
The VIPOR-SOWF (Sump Oil Water Filtration) polishes and captures sheen as it evacuates water, with complete shutoff capabilities in the event of an oil discharge. Under normal conditions, when water drains into the VIPOR-SOWF system, the 6-inch pre-filter (25 micron) captures small sediment. Next, water enters the 6- x 24-inch HFF (Hydrocarbon Flow Filter) where hydrocarbons and most volatile organic compounds will be removed from the water to a non-detectable level while meeting federal SPCC mandates. Should a major hydrocarbon release occur, the VIPOR – SOWF stops the flow through the filter. As the dewatering pump continues to operate, water rises in the standpipe and activates the float switch that sends a signal to alarm for system attention.
The VIPOR-SOWF is most commonly installed in a secondary containment vault with a collection sump. Though it operates similar to other oil-detecting pumps on the market, only the VIPOR dewatering pump system prevents sheen from passing.
VIPOR-100 SOWF Dewatering Pump
The VIPOR-100 SOWF operates similar to the VIPOR-SOWF, but at a flow rate that can exceed 100 gallons per minute. Under normal conditions when water enters the vault, it flows to the low area of the dewatering pump and vault sump filter (VSF) ring. The VSF ring filters large sediment in the water.
Rising water activates the dewatering pump. The pump moves the water up the 2-inch PVC pipe to the VIPOR-100 SOWF. Inside the VIPOR-100, small sediment (25 micron) is filtered by the 8-inch pre-filter before it enters the main chamber. This is where hydrocarbons, and most volatile organic compounds, are removed to a non-detectable level to meet federal SPCC mandates. The filtered water is released through gravity flow and into the surrounding ground area.
The VIPOR-100 SOWF dewatering pump has the broadest application because it is the most versatile – it does not require a sump or crock, though it does need a free discharge area. It is most commonly used to retrofit existing concrete moat containment.
VIPOR-SUMP Dewatering Pump
The VIPOR-SUMP dewatering pump system polishes and captures sheen as it evacuates water with complete shutoff capabilities in the event of an oil discharge. Under normal conditions when water drains into the VIPOR-SUMP system, the vault sump filter (VSF) ring surrounding the VIPOR-SUMP unit captures large sediment and the pre-filter (25 micron) captures small sediment. Next, water enters the 6-x 18-inch HFF (Hydrocarbon Flow Filter) where hydrocarbons and most volatile organic compounds will be removed from the water to a non-detectable level while meeting federal SPCC mandates. The filtered water will then be pumped out of the system by its submersible dewatering pump.
The VIPOR-SUMP is commonly used in transformer vaults with an existing sump crock. It performs the same functions as an oil water separator, with the added benefit of preventing sheen to pass.
Frequently Asked Questions
Many of our substations already have secondary containment, most commonly concrete moats or composite walls. We often need to manually dewater these after a heavy rain. Do you offer any automated pumping or filtration solutions that can help us cut down on O&M time?
When it comes to retrofitting existing containment, it’s important to identify the main source of concern and the expectations of the customer. For customers that currently have concrete moats with no drainage capabilities, we recommend one of our automated VIPOR solutions. If passive drainage is preferred, we recommend plumbing the drain to an HFF Oil Stop Valve located in a vault outside of the containment area.
