The National Fire Protection Association reports that in 2018 alone, there were 500,000 structural fires reported in the United States – equivalent to one fire every 63 seconds. Justrite and Eagle’s safety cans significantly reduce accidents and fire hazards, creating a safer work environment and ensuring the well-being of individuals.
Why are Safety Cans Necessary?
Safety cans prevent fires and explosions by controlling flammable vapors. The danger lies in vapors from liquids at or above their flash point, where they can form ignitable mixtures with air.
Safety cans are essential for storing and handling flammable or combustible liquids in workplace environments for several important reasons:

Fire prevention
Safety cans are designed to minimize the risk of fires when handling hazardous liquids. They contain vapors and prevent spills, reducing the chance of accidental ignition.

Regulatory compliance
Using approved safety cans helps businesses comply with OSHA regulations, state and local fire codes, and other safety standards.

Durability
Safety cans are constructed from materials like galvanized steel or high-density polyethylene, making them resistant to damage, corrosion, and heavy use.

Controlled pouring
Many safety cans, especially Type II cans, feature designs that allow for precise pouring, reducing the risk of spills and improving efficiency.

Proper identification
Safety cans often come in different colors to help easily identify the contents, further reducing the risk of mishandling.

Protection in case of fire
In the event of a fire, safety cans are designed to safely relieve internal pressure, preventing explosions that could occur with non-approved containers.
Why Choose a Justrite or Eagle Safety Can?
Justrite and Eagle safety cans are built to last and outperform competitors. Justrite Safety Group is a trusted brand, known for its commitment to quality, durability, and safety compliance.
SAFETY AND COMPLIANCE

Testing
Certified from Underwriters Laboratories (UL/ULC), and TÜV SÜD. Cans are pressure tested to UL regulatory standards.

Vapor Vent and Self-Closing lid
Leak-proof, self-closing lid with gasket allows vapor escape to prevent rupture in a fire and guards against spills.

Trilingual Label
Trilingual Warning label provides important instructions and precautions in English, Spanish and French.
DURABILITY

Made in the USA
24-gauge galvanized US steel with rugged, chemical-resistant powder-coat finish, stands up to rigorous use.

Flame Arrestors
Stainless steel flame arrester stops flashback ignition. Long 3-1/2-in (88-mm) length offer safe secure insertion of gas nozzle.

Leak-Proof
100% leak tested lid. Every safety can is tested under pressure to ensure it will not leak.

Rugged Design
Deep draw design with a double interlock “no weld” bottom seam for a better seal.
EASE OF USE

Comfort
Free-swinging rounded handles (Type I) or fixed handles (Type II) for comfortable carrying.

Safe Handle
Carry handle has a rounded design, doesn’t cut into the hand and made to carry heavy loads.

Easy to Pour
Type I (one-opening) cans come with a convenient optional funnel to pour into smaller openings.

Easy to Fill
In Type II cans, an ergonomic lift lever opens the self-closing spout wide for easy filling.
VERSATILITY

DOT cans available
The only FM-approved Department of Transportation (DOT) cans. The DOT cans are Type II with roll bars.

Various Capacities
Available in various capacities to accommodate equipment of different sizes such as equipment tanks.
What to Look for When Choosing a Safety Can?
Considerations
Justrite and Eagle Benefits
What is the difference between a Type I and Type II safety can?
Justrite and Eagle both have Type I and Type II safety cans.
- Type I safety cans have one opening from which to fill and pour into a larger receiving vessel.
- Type II safety cans have two openings: a top opening with a lift lever for filling and a second one with a flexible metal hose attached for controlled, glug-free dispensing into smaller openings.
What safety features should I look for?
These are the safety features included in a Justrite or Eagle can:
-
Automatic positive-pressure relief vent vapor between 3 and 5 psig (0.2 and 0.35 bar) internal pressure to prevent rupture (or explosion in event of fire).
-
Stainless steel flame arrestors to prevent flashback ignition and explosions when handling flammable liquids.
-
Yellow band around can body (Justrite cans only)—warns of danger and includes large area for content identification.

Did You Know?
When it comes to regulations, the guidance on self-closing doors can be somewhat vague, as you might encounter inconsistent or even contradictory requirements between different state and local jurisdictions. Moreover, these regulations can evolve over time, possibly rendering safety cabinets with manually-closing doors noncompliant in the future. (Notably, several states already mandate the use of self-closing doors.)
