Justrite Flammable Liquid Safety Cabinets

Except in rare cases of natural catastrophe, every fire is preventative. Virtually every place of business has an occasion to use flammable or combustible liquids. Whether it is a manufacturing or processing plant, laboratory, or commercial institution, fire risks can be reduced by storing hazardous liquids in Justrite flammable liquid safety cabinets.

Flammable Cabinet Safety Features

Sturdy Cabinet Construction

Sturdy 18-gauge (1 mm) double wall steel fully welded (not riveted) construction with 1.5-in of insulating air space provides greater protection in a fire since air gaps are reduced. The fully-welded construction also holds squareness for a longer lifespan.

Corrosion Resistance

The durable, chemical resistant, lead-free powder-coat paint finish inside and out helps retain the high gloss look and minimizes the effects of corrosion and humidity.

Durable Door Hinges

All cabinet doors feature a continuous piano hinge to ensure smooth closure and even weight distribution, which makes it easier to open and close.

Innovative Door Features

Self-indexing cabinet doors feature an astragal lip that help seal the gap between the door, preventing moisture, debris and unauthorized access from affecting the contents inside. Rounded corners on Justrite safety cabinet doors help reduce accidental nicks and cuts.

Secure Closure

All cabinets have a stainless steel, 3-point bullet self-latching door system to provide fail-safe positive door closure with increased heat resistance.

Self-Indexing Doors

Cabinets with self-closing doors feature a patented, concealed self-close mechanism to provide obstruction-free access to the top shelf space. The self-indexing doors guarantee they will close in sequence and assure a tight closure from top to bottom.

State-of-the-Art Shelves

Patented SpillSlope® shelves are slightly sloped to direct spills to the back and bottom of leakproof sump. The shelves meet ANSI standards of 350 lbs. safe allowable loads. Welded shelf hangers interlock with shelves to offer safe, maximum non-slip stability without flimsy brackets, that adjusts on 3 inch centers.

Leakproof Sump

Cabinets feature a 2-in leakproof containment sump to hold and safely contain dangerous leaks and spills, meeting EPA regulations.

Prevent Unauthorized Use

Easily secure and protect your chemical contents with the flush U-Loc ™ handle that can be locked with included keys or accept a padlock for greater security. U-Loc handles do not require manual rotation to engage the mandatory 3-point latch.

Other safety cabinet features include:

  • Fusible links (on self-close models) hold doors wide open and melt at 165 degrees F (74 degrees Celsius) for automatic closure in case of fire
  • HazAlert™ reflective labels that warns of contents in English, French and Spanish
  • Adjustable leveling feet to ensure stability, even on uneven surfaces
  • Built-in grounding lug (on outside side panel) to accept optional antistatic grounding wire

Safety Cabinets with Self-Closing Doors – The Safest Option for Chemical Storage

Handling chemicals in the workplace can be a straightforward task with the right equipment. Justrite flammable safety cabinets with self-closing doors simplify this process remarkably.  Not only are the self-closing doors safer in case of fire, it’s also easier to work with the cabinet doors open.

No need to prop them with something heavy, just use the fusible link as it was meant to operate. Installation is easy. While holding the door open, the user inserts the fusible link, then releases the door slowly. The link catches behind the hinge, creating tension that allows the door to remain open.

How to Use Fusible Links to Prop Cabinet Doors Open

Why Use Safety Cabinets with Self-Closing Doors?

Safest Option for Chemical Point of Use in the Workplace.

The fail-safe closing mechanism ensures three-point stainless steel bullet latching system works every time, removing the “human” element. The hidden self-closing feature ensures unobstructed access to the top shelf space, and the self-indexing doors ensure they close in the correct order, achieving a secure seal from top to bottom.

Keep Doors Open When Working with Chemicals

The self-closing doors are designed to automatically close, so when working out of the cabinet in the workplace, use the fusible link to prop doors open. If inadvertently left open in case of fire, the link will melt at 165 degrees F, slamming the doors shut to prevent fire from reaching the cabinet contents.

Meets All Fire Codes

Some states require using safety cabinets with self-closing doors, but not all of them. Since fire codes and regulations can vary by state, choosing a cabinet with self-closing doors is the only way to guarantee compliance with NFPA and IFC codes as well as authorities having jurisdiction.

Should Flammable Safety Cabinets Be Vented?

Justrite flammable safety cabinets are designed to meet NFPA 30 code requirements. All cabinets include dual vents with built-in flame arresters with bungs, usually located on the side of a cabinet: one high and one low. The vents typically accommodate a two-inch NPT threaded rigid steel pipe. Per NFPA, venting is not recommended unless the authority having jurisdiction requires it or if building owners require it for increased health and safety. In such cases, the NFPA standard recommends a thermally actuated damper, such as the Justrite Safe-T-Vent™ Thermally-Actuated Safety Cabinet Vent Damper, as the best way to ensure the performance of a ventilated safety cabinet during a fire.

Are safety cabinets required to have their bung plugs installed?
Yes, it is required to keep the bung caps tightly in place, unless venting. Please reference the TechTALK on Safety Cabinet Venting for further information. https://www.justrite.com/tech-talk/safety-cabinet-venting
Can I leave my containers in boxes and store them in a safety cabinet?

This question is asked a lot. There is nothing in writing to preclude you from having boxes, papers, etc., in a safety cabinet, but we discourage it. This is an area of best practice not addressed by the law. The standards to which a cabinet is tested limit the internal temperature from exceeding 325°F (163ºC) for 10 minutes in a fire test. This is a conservative temperature below the auto ignition temperatures of the liquids being stored. It makes sense that packaging, such as boxes, are made of materials with auto ignition temperatures higher than the 325°F (163ºC) too. But, what can be dangerous is if those boxes become soiled with residues of the flammable liquids which in turn give off harmful, ignitable, or hazardous vapors. Additionally, it is important to avoid storing materials and combinations of material that can spontaneously combust and create fire inside the cabinet, like oily rags and incompatible materials.

Our vote is on the side of best practice, safety, and of tidy housekeeping. We have heard of OSHA inspectors frowning on this practice even in the absence of law. Can I store gasoline and oil in the same cabinet?
Yes. Gasoline and oil can be stored together in the same flammable liquid safety cabinet, as long as the cabinet’s capacity limits are not exceeded. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.106(d)(3)(i) and (ii) allows a maximum of 60 gallons of Class I or Class II liquids, or up to 120 gallons of Class III liquids, to be stored in a single storage cabinet. Always follow applicable codes, container compatibility requirements, and manufacturer guidance when storing multiple materials. Learn more about proper chemical storage in safety cabinets. https://www.justrite.com/news/proper-chemical-storage-in-flammable-safety-cabinets/
Can I use sorbents as a preventive measure for spills within a safety cabinet?
No. Sorbents are not intended for long-term or unattended use inside a safety cabinet. Absorbed liquids remain hazardous, flammable, or toxic, and sorbents should not be used to line cabinet shelves or sumps as a preventive measure. Universal sorbents containing cellulose should not be used for acids, bases, or unknown liquids, as cellulose can react with certain acids and create a fire risk.
Can containers be stored in the sump of a safety cabinet?
Safety cabinet sumps are designed to be watertight and at least 2 inches deep to help contain leaks and provide early visual indication of spills. Regulations do not specify a minimum sump volume or prohibit storing containers in the sump. However, some authorities having jurisdiction or internal safety policies may discourage this practice. Users should follow site-specific requirements and local guidance. Do I have to store my paints and inks in a red cabinet?
No. Any flammable liquid safety cabinet approved for flammable or combustible liquids can be used to store paints and inks. Red cabinets are often preferred for paint cans because they include an extra shelf, but yellow cabinets can also be configured with additional shelving to store gallon containers efficiently. Multiple cabinet colors are available. Learn what color chemical storage will work for your operation. https://www.justrite.com/news/proper-chemical-storage-includes-color-coded-cabinets/
Do I need self-closing cabinet?
Self-closing requirements for flammable liquid safety cabinets depend on state and local fire codes. Hazardous materials safety cabinets are required to be self-closing. As a best practice, Justrite recommends using self-closing cabinets whenever possible to enhance safety and compliance. Learn more about flammable cabinets with self-closing doors. https://www.justrite.com/compliance/safety-cabinets-self-closing-doors
Do I need to keep a safety cabinet up against the wall?
No, our cabinets have been tested and approved as freestanding and can be used in that manner. Explore other best practices for safety cabinet usage. https://www.justrite.com/news/best-practices-for-using-flammable-safety-cabinets/
Do flammable safety cabinets need to be grounded?
To ensure safety in your facility, it’s important to eliminate the chance of an electrostatic discharge while handling flammable fluids. If you are going to dispense Class 1 flammable liquids from a container held within safety cabinet, you need to ground the cabinet. As an industry best practice, we recommend grounding the cabinet when dispensing Class 2 combustible liquids if the liquids are near, at, or above the liquid’s flashpoint temperature. Learn more about best grounding practices in this helpful guide from Justrite. https://www.justrite.com/news/justrites-guide-to-safe-grounding-and-bonding-practices/
Do you have any performance data on your seismic bracket?
No, we do not have data on the seismic resistance of our seismic bracket when used to anchor safety cabinets to floor or wall applications. It is our intent that the end user, or the end user’s qualified engineer, evaluates this product for use in the end user's particular application. Evaluations vary widely based on building construction and code requirements. Upon request, we will supply your engineer with a structural data kit on the individual components used in the seismic bracket for their evaluation.
Do your flammable safety cabinets have a fire rating?

No, Justrite and Eagle flammable safety cabinets are not fire rated. However, they are fire tested to help protect contents under real-world conditions.

These cabinets are tested in accordance with Factory Mutual (FM) standards, where the internal temperature does not exceed 325°F for up to 10 minutes during a fire exposure. This performance helps reduce the risk of flammable liquids igniting and supports compliance with OSHA and NFPA storage requirements. Learn more about our fire testing. https://www.justrite.com/tech-talk/what-makes-a-flammable-liquids-safety-cabinet-safe

Does my safety cabinet need to be grounded?
It is necessary to ground a safety cabinet if you are dispensing liquids from container(s) inside the cabinet, and the potential of an ignitable vapor is possible. This is not to preclude one from grounding all cabinets as a best practice. Please see our TechTALK on Safety Cabinet Grounding for further information. https://www.justrite.com/tech-talk/grounding-a-justrite-safety-cabinet
How do I clean up a spill in the sump of a safety cabinet, since there is no drain plug?
Cabinets should be inspected often and spills should be cleaned up immediately. The 2-inch watertight sump in a safety cabinet is a required feature to minimize the impact of a spill. We do not have a drain plug in the cabinet's sump, because plugs are vulnerable and can be mishandled. Sorbents and rags for absorption are typically used for liquid clean up. See more cabinet operation and maintenance information. https://www.justrite.com/news/11-tips-for-your-safety-storage-cabinet/
How do I vent a safety cabinet?
Safety cabinets are designed to be used with or without venting, depending on your application and local codes. If venting is required, it should be done in accordance with manufacturer instructions and applicable regulations to maintain the cabinet’s fire-protection performance. For detailed guidance on when venting is recommended, proper venting methods, and code considerations, refer to our TechTALK on Safety Cabinet Venting. https://www.justrite.com/tech-talk/safety-cabinet-venting
How many gallons will a safety cabinet sump hold?
Safety cabinet sumps are required to be at least 2 inches deep and watertight. The actual sump volume varies depending on the cabinet’s width and depth, and minimum gallon capacity is not specified in applicable regulations. The sump is designed to provide a visual indication of a leak and to contain spills long enough for corrective action before liquid escapes the cabinet. What are the door weight and attachment limits for the Utili-Guard+ flammable safety cabinet?
Door load capacity varies by cabinet size. The 45-gallon and 90-gallon models support up to 35 pounds per door, with a maximum of four attachments per door. The 30-gallon model supports up to 17 pounds per door, with a maximum of two attachments per door. For top-mounted door attachments, maintain at least 1.5 inches of clearance below the door edge to ensure proper operation and safe closing. Please see the Utili-Guard+ flammable cabinet brochure for more information. https://www.justrite.com/media/mageplaza/product_attachments/attachment_file/j/u/justrite_utili-guard-flammable-safety-cabinet-dvp_l-jr541.pdf
Why can’t I store 45 gallons in a 45-gallon safety cabinet?
The usable storage capacity of a safety cabinet depends on the size and shape of the containers being stored, not just the cabinet’s rated capacity. As an example, a 45-gallon Justrite safety cabinet typically holds nine 5-gallon safety cans. Cabinet ratings refer to fire safety performance, not a guaranteed liquid volume.
