EPA proposes increase use of aerosol recycling systems
In 2018, the EPA proposed including aerosol cans under the Universal Waste Program. The goal is to reduce the number of aerosol cans going to municipal solid waste landfill sites or waste combustors. Instead, it will encourage the development of more municipal and commercial recycling programs. The EPA will save an estimated $3 million each year in regulatory costs.
This also opens the door for universal waste distributors to recycle aerosol cans. Some states, like California and Colorado, already classify aerosols as universal waste. The proposed EPA ruling would apply to the entire U.S.
Reduce aerosol can explosions
According to the Consumer Specialty Products Association, more than 3 billion aerosol cans are produced in the U.S. each year. Approximately 80 percent of those are steel containers, which is the most recycled material on the planet.
